The Manager of the German State Theatre Timisoara (GSTT), Lucian M. Vărșăndan, was appointed in the position of Secretary of State within the Ministry of Culture, through the decision made by Prime Minister Dacian Cioloș. The appointment was made at the proposal of the Minister of Culture Corina Şuteu and was published on May 19, 2016 in the Official Monitor of Romania.
Vărşăndan is 40 years old. He studied Germanic literature, English literature and law. He was editor of the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, then became literary secretary at GSTT and afterwards, head of the Artistic Secretarial service within the GSTT, before taking over the management of the theatre in 2007. In recent years he was employed repeatedly to advise on developing proposals legislative changes for culture, some of the current provisions of the special law on public institutions performances being based on his suggestions.
Since taking office at the theatre in 2007 he was especially concerned with strengthening the position of the GSTT within the theatrical scene in Romania, goals assumed by inviting numerous prestigious collaborators, both national and foreign, to GSTT.
GSTT is preparing numerous projects during this period: the participation at two festivals in Romania and Moldova by the end of the season and the putting together of the production "Biedermann and the arsonists" by Max Frisch, directed by Gabor Tompa.
There is an international co-production scheduled in the fall with the show “Spring Awakening” by Frank Wedekind, other projects, including the 2017/2018 season being linked with the presence of artists such as Răzvan Mazilu, Yuri Kordonsky a.s.o. in Timisoara.
During his stay in office as Secretary of State, Lucian Vărşăndan’s contract will be suspended.
