The German State Theatre Timișoara is organising a new edition of the European Theatre Festival Eurothalia in 2023. On this occasion, the team is preparing the first edition of the Photography in Theatre exhibition within the festival, complementing this year's Perspectives motto with an open call for professional or amateur photographers, regardless of age or experience.

2. Purpose of the exhibition
This exhibition aims to promote the art of photography and theatre by exploring different angles of theatre captured through the lens of photographers. The objective of the Photography in Theatre open call is to showcase the friendship between the performing arts and the medium of archival photography through the three proposed themes: performance photography, backstage photography as well as photographs illustrating the effect of theatre on the community.

4. Theme of the call
4.1 Performance photography
This category includes photographs that capture key moments in theatrical performances. Photographs will be judged on composition, creativity and ability to convey the emotion and atmosphere of the performance.
4.2 Backstage photography
This category includes photographs that explore the backstage of the theatre, including actor preparation, stage preparation, and costume and prop preparation. Photographs will be judged on composition, creativity and ability to convey the story backstage.
4.3 The effect of theatre on the community
This category includes photographs that explore how theatre affects the community and the people around it. Photographs may be taken during rehearsals, theatre classes or during theatre-related social activities such as audience meetings. Photos will be judged on their ability to convey emotion, creativity and originality.
5. Eligibility
The exhibition is open to all photographers, regardless of their level of experience, age or residence. Entrants may submit a maximum of 3 photographs per category. Photos must be original, without infringing the copyright of others.
6. Application procedure
Participants must send their photos in digital format to [email protected]. A maximum of 3 photos / theme can be submitted.
Each photo must have a title attached, as appropriate: of the performance (in the case of the Performance Photo category), or an original title (in the case of the Backstage Photo and Theatre's Effect on the Community categories), and participants must include information about the location, date and any other relevant information about the photo. The title is not relevant in the selection process.By entering, the participant confirms that he/she is the author of the photographs and owns all rights to the photographs submitted.
Technical specifications:
Resolution: 240-300 dpi with a minimum short side of 2400 pixels
Landscape or portrait format
Recommended aspect ratio: 3:2, 1:1, 4:3. 16:9 is not recommended, excluding the possibility of being part of a vertical triptych.
The maximum size of a finalist's exhibition space will be 3 x A1.
7. Judging criteria
Photographs will be judged on the basis of their suitability for at least one of the competition themes, artistic excellence, originality, documentary photographic concept and composition. The jury will individually award between 1 and 5 points to photographs submitted according to these criteria, in an evaluation grid document.
If there are major discrepancies between the scores awarded individually, the jury will debate the choices and the score awarded.
8. Jury
The jury will be composed of experts in photography, theatre, and social media. It will evaluate the photos based on specific criteria for each category.
9. Exhibition
The exhibition will be open to the general public and the photographs will be displayed in dedicated spaces within the theatre festival. The photographs will be professionally displayed and labelled with the title and number of the photograph as well as additional information about the photograph. The photos will be on display for the duration of the theatre festival and the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite photo in each category. The method of voting will be by placing a sticker received with the purchase of a ticket to one of the festival performances next to the photograph.
10. Recognition
The winner will be announced at the closing ceremony of the theatre festival. An award will be given for each thematic category, as voted by the audience. The name of the author(s) and the work(s) will be published on the organiser's social media accounts.
11. Copyright
Participants retain the copyright of their photos. Participants give their consent for their photos to be used for promotional purposes of the theatre festival, with mention of their names and respective photos.
12. Final provisions
The organisers reserve the right to remove photos that do not comply with the rules or are deemed offensive.
