Junk Opera by The Tiger Lillies, Julian Crouch, and Phelim McDermott (directed by Dragoș Mușoiu). In collaboration with the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl – Salzkammergut 2024, a staged reading of the danube waves by Thomas Perle, directed by Tristan Linder, was produced and subsequently presented both in Bad Ischl and in Timișoara.
Productions by the theatre were selected for six national and international festivals: the “Cătălina Buzoianu” Directing Festival (Iași), the National Theatre Festival (Bucharest), the “Interferences” International Theatre Festival (Cluj), the Interethnic Theatre Festival (Satu Mare), the “Madách” International Theatre Meeting (MITEM) in Budapest, and the “Atelier” International Performing Arts Festival (Baia Mare).
In the autumn of 2024, the German State Theatre organized the project “Theater Connection – The Theatre That Unites,” during which the Timișoara audience, theatre critics, and journalists were invited to watch three acclaimed productions from theatres across Romania. These included Woyzeck by Georg Büchner, directed by Hunor Horváth, a production of the German department of the “Radu Stanca” National Theatre in Sibiu; Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Vlad Cristache, a production of the “Regina Maria” Theatre in Oradea; and Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell, directed by Răzvan Mazilu, a production of the “Stela Popescu” Theatre in Bucharest.
Then, in February 2025, the German State Theatre and the Hungarian State Theatre “Csiky Gergely” in Timișoara jointly organized a showcase in which they presented their latest productions to critics and guests from Romania and abroad.
In April 2025, GSTT went on tour in Germany with the performance Romanian Diary. Timișoara, written and directed by Carmen Lidia Vidu, at the State Theatre in Bruchsal (Germany), a traditional partner of the German stage in Timișoara. The two performances, followed by audience discussions, played to sold-out houses.
Also this season, theatre pedagogy played an important role in the institution’s strategy, both through performance introductions and post-show discussions, as well as through two projects in collaboration with the “Nikolaus Lenau” Theoretical High School: the NiL Long Theatre Weekend – held on April 11 and 12, 2025 – and the 23rd edition of the International German-Language Youth Theatre Festival, which took place from April 22 to 26, 2025, with the participation of students from Croatia, Germany, Serbia, Hungary, and Romania (Sibiu, Bucharest, and Timișoara).
At the Romanian Theatre Union (UNITER) Awards Gala, which took place on May 26, 2025, at the “Marin Sorescu” National Theatre in Craiova, director Niky Wolcz, a long-time collaborator of our theatre and director of several productions in our repertoire, was honored with the UNITER Award for Lifetime Achievement.
In the recently concluded season, the repertoire of the German State Theatre included 24 titles. A total of 111 performances were held, both at the home venue and on tour in festivals across the country and abroad, reaching 13,022 spectators of all ages. The average seat occupancy rate at the theatre’s home venue was 91%.
