30 Years of NiL: Anniversary Theatre Weekend at TGST

The German State Theatre Timișoara (GSTT) will host a new edition of the “The Long Weekend of Theater - NiL” from April 24 to 26, 2026, marking a special milestone this year: 30 years of the NiL theatre phenomenon. The program brings together performances by NiL troupes and offers audiences an intense theatrical experience over three consecutive days. Admission is by invitation only, subject to availability, and invitations can be picked up at the theatre’s box office.

Many members of the GSTT artistic ensemble took their first steps in theatre within NiL. The group was founded in 1996 by Christian Bormann, with actors Ioana Iacob and Alexandru Mihăescu among its first generation. In 1998, the group was taken over by actress Isolde Cobeț. NiL-Junior was later created to give middle school students the opportunity to perform, followed in 2008 by the After NiL theatre group, initiated by actress Isa Berger. Today, the artistic coordination of NiL productions and troupes is led by actors Isolde Cobeț, Alma Diaconu, and Robert Bogdanov-Schein.

Through this project, young artists have the opportunity to experience the professional stage, develop their skills, and engage directly with audiences. Over the years, NiL troupes have participated in numerous national and international festivals, contributing to the promotion of youth theatre and the multicultural character of the city.

Organized by the German State Theatre Timișoara—an institution with over seven decades of tradition in the Romanian and European theatre landscape—the event aligns with the theatre’s strategic direction of supporting arts education and attracting young audiences. GSTT is renowned for promoting German-language theatre and for its openness to contemporary projects and international collaborations. The “The Long Weekend of Theater - NiL” thus becomes not only a series of performances, but also a platform for the next generation of actors, directors, and theatre-makers, reinforcing Timișoara’s role as an important cultural and educational hub.
