The 24th Edition of the International German-speaking School and Youth Theatre Festival Begins!

The German State Theatre Timișoara (GSTT) is organizing, from April 6–10, 2026, the 24th edition of the International German-speaking School and Youth Theatre Festival, a long-standing cultural and educational project dedicated to promoting the German language and intercultural dialogue through the art of theatre.

Founded in 2000, the festival has become a landmark event in the cultural and educational landscape, bringing together each year in Timișoara theatre groups made up of pupils and young people from Romania and other European countries. The event provides a structured framework for the exchange of best practices, the expression of creativity, and the development of participants’ artistic and linguistic skills.

This year’s edition offers a diverse program, including theatre performances by school and youth groups from Romania (Timișoara, Sibiu, Bucharest), Serbia, and Germany. In addition to the performances, specialized workshops will take place at the “Nikolaus Lenau” High School, led by actors and theatre educators from Romania and abroad. These activities aim to deepen participants’ understanding of stage expression, encourage teamwork, and foster intercultural dialogue in a European context. The festival’s artistic direction is coordinated by TGST actors Isolde Cobeț, Robert Bogdanov-Schein, and Alma Diaconu.

Through its unique profile, the festival promotes German-language theatre as both an educational and artistic tool, facilitating connections between the school environment and the professional theatre world. At the same time, it supports the personal development of young participants by encouraging initiative, creativity, and active involvement in cultural life.

The festival is organized by the German State Theatre Timișoara, a public cultural institution with a strong tradition in promoting German-language theatre, in partnership with the “Nikolaus Lenau” Theoretical High School, a long-standing collaborator in educational and cultural projects. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to supporting education through culture and promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.

Through its continuity and relevance, the International German-speaking School and Youth Theatre Festival contributes to strengthening European cultural relations and to shaping a young, active, and engaged audience, as well as future generations of performing arts creators.

Admission to the festival is free, based on a ticket that can be reserved at the GSTT ticket agency, subject to availability. Performances are in German, without translation. More details here: https://teatrulgerman.ro/de/
