After the opening of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and the fall of the Communist regime in the Soviet Union, it seemed that nothing was standing in the way of democracy any longer. Yet, 20 years later, the initial euphoria owed to the epochal breakthrough of the fundamental democratic ideals turned into a great disappointment.
