Sidy Thal, the production about the 1938 anti-Semitic bombing - three performances in October, two of them in Bucharest at the National Theater Festival

Sidy Thal, the production of the German State Theatre Timișoara in co-production with the Jewish State Theatre in Bucharest, written by Thomas Perle and Clemens Bechtel, and directed by Clemens Bechtel will have three performances in October.

The first one, in Timișoara, will take place on Wednesday, October 16, at 19.30. The performance, which starts at the Stronghold Synagogue and continues in the GSTT hall, is already SOLD-OUT, for which we thank the Timișoara audience. Then, on October 20 and 21, there will be two performances in Bucharest as part of the 34th edition of the National Theatre Festival (FNT), which this year runs from October 18-27.

The multilingual production (performed in Yiddish, German and Romanian) was included in the official selection of the Festival because it was considered by the jury (composed of theater critics Mihaela Michailov, Călin Ciobotari and Ionuț Sociu) as representative of this year's theme: "dramaturgies of the possible" - challenging productions, relevant either in terms of their theme or their means of construction.

On November 26, 1938, two hand grenades exploded in the auditorium during a performance by the Jewish-Bukovinian singer Sidy Thal and her ensemble at the Timișoara Theater. An anti-Semitic attack by the Iron Guard, a far-right nationalist group, in which four people were killed and 70 injured.

An event, little known in Timișoara and Romania, which playwright Thomas Perle and director Clemens Bechtel researched with the help of Maria Mădălina Irimia from the Center for the Study of Jewish History in Romania - "Wilhelm Filderman", and created a documentary performance.

What is the truth? What really happened? Sidy Thal is an attempt to reconstruct the onslaught and the moment when anti-Semitism and fascism became part of everyday life in a multicultural society, leading to the horror of World War II and the Shoah.
