The German State Theatre Timișoara announces the premiere of the performance Penthesilea. A Requiem, based on the text by Nino Haratischwili and directed by Eberhard Köhler. The production marks a special moment for the institution: the celebration of 55 years of artistic activity of actress Ida Jarcsek-Gaza, one of the theatre’s emblematic personalities.
Penthesilea. A Requiem reinterprets the myth of the warrior Amazon Penthesilea, capturing the tension between duty to the community and personal desires, in a world dominated by conflict, loyalty, and sacrifice. The queen of the Amazons, bearing a history marked by 43 victories and a single defeat, experiences the drama of an impossible choice when she falls in love with the most powerful adversary of her people, the famous Achilles. The show offers a contemporary, poetic, and profound interpretation of the ancient myth, focusing on the inner strength of the main character and the human fragility revealed by the confrontation between love and war.
The cast brings together a strong ensemble of the theatre. The role of Penthesilea is played by Ida Jarcsek-Gaza, alongside Ioana Iacob, while her stage partner in the role of Achilles is Radu Vulpe. The character Alcibie is played by Olga Török, and Thersites is portrayed by Alexandru Mihăescu. The creative team is completed by Ioana Popescu (set design), Simon Ho (music), Bojita Ilici (makeup), Victoria Medvedeva (choreography), Mira Țâra (dramaturgy), Alexandru Mihăescu (assistant director), and Costinel Stănescu (technical direction).
The official premiere will take place on December 14, 2025, at 19:30, in the hall of the German State Theatre Timișoara, followed by additional performances on December 15 and December 19, 2025, at the same time. The show is recommended for audiences aged 14 and over.
Through this production, the German State Theatre Timișoara continues to promote contemporary dramaturgy and the dialogue between myth and present, offering the audience an intense artistic experience marked by visual expressiveness, a ritualistic atmosphere, and deeply profound acting. The premiere of Penthesilea. A Requiem stands as a tribute both to feminine strength and to the theatrical tradition cultivated by TGST for more than seven decades.
