At the beginning of the new season, the German State Theatre Timișoara presents two evenings dedicated to contemporary playwriting and theatrical forms that naturally find their place in an unconventional setting, outside the theatre’s traditional auditorium. In other words, we are taking the stage outside and bringing it closer to you.
On 26 and 27 September, starting at 7:30 PM, at 2 Cuvin Street, audiences are invited to “Drama Night 1” and “Drama Night 2”, two evenings brought together under the concept of “Drama Nights”, conceived and coordinated by Irisz Kovacs and Clemens Bechtel.
The project stems from an interest in contemporary playwriting and in the possibilities that an alternative space can offer theatre. The two evenings bring together performances of different sizes and formats, alongside a live musical moment, creating a programme in which audiences can discover several perspectives on theatre today.
“Drama Night 1” – 26 September
The first evening brings “The Politicians”, based on Wolfram Lotz, to the audience. The performance was developed through a collective working process by the artistic team. With humour and absurdity, the text explores the language and mechanisms of political discourse.
The programme continues with “German Song Night”, a live musical performance by Dana Borteanu and Roxana Ardeleanu, and concludes with “Laios”, directed by Alexandru Mihăescu, based on Roland Schimmelpfennig. Drawing on Greek mythology, the performance offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the story of Laios and explores the relationship between power, destiny and responsibility.

“Drama Night 2” – 27 September
The second evening opens with “canned meat”, by Ferdinand Schmalz, directed by Clemens Bechtel. The performance begins with the encounter of several characters in a transit space and develops into a story about isolation, mobility and the contemporary world.
“German Song Night” returns to the programme, while the evening concludes with “Love”, directed by Irisz Kovacs, by Sivan Ben Yishai. The performance follows the encounter between two artists and explores, through the dynamics of a couple’s relationship, themes such as identity, cultural differences and power relations.
By bringing these performances together in an alternative space, “Drama Nights” offers audiences the opportunity to encounter contemporary theatre in a more flexible format, in which proximity and the particular qualities of the venue become part of the theatrical experience.
The two evenings continue the German State Theatre Timișoara’s interest in contemporary theatrical forms and in creating encounters between artists, texts and audiences in contexts beyond the traditional stage.
“Drama Night 1” takes place on Saturday, 26 September, while “Drama Night 2” takes place on Sunday, 27 September, both starting at 7:30 PM, at the future Studio Theatre, 2 Cuvin Street.
The performances are recommended for audiences aged 17 and over and are surtitled in Romanian and English.
