The German State Theatre Timișoara (GSTT) has begun rehearsals for a new production, a theatre research project by Elise Wilk and Clemens Bechtel exploring the institution’s history between 1953 and 1983. The premiere is scheduled for Friday, 12 March 2027, at 7:30 p.m.
Drawing on the history of the German State Theatre Timișoara, the project documents three decades of artistic activity during a period marked by profound political and social transformations. The research traces the development of a cultural institution dedicated to Romania’s German-speaking community, situated at the intersection of cultural identity, state censorship and political instrumentalisation during the socialist period.
Through this exploration of the institution’s past, the production seeks to bring to public attention the stories, contexts and experiences that have helped shape the theatre’s identity. At the same time, the artistic endeavour opens up a space for reflection on the relationship between art and power, freedom of expression, and the role of theatre in preserving and asserting the identity of a minority community.
The production is based on a process of documentation and research that brings together historical and artistic perspectives to explore how theatrical activity unfolded within a restrictive political context. The years 1953 and 1983 mark the timeframe under investigation and refer to the history of an institution whose development is closely intertwined with that of Romania’s German-speaking community.
The production is directed by Clemens Bechtel, with set design by Ioana Popescu, dramaturgy by Mira Țâra, and documentation and research coordinated by Ida Jarcsek-Gaza. Music and video are by Alex Halka, lighting design by Cosmin Anania, and make-up by Bojița Ilici. Aida Olaru is the assistant director, and Ovidiu Radu is the stage manager.
The cast includes Isa Berger, Robert Bogdanov-Schein, Alma Diaconu, Boris Gaza, Daniel Ghidel, Franz Kattesch, Alexandru Mihăescu, Olga Török, Simona Vintilă and Radu Vulpe.
With this new production, the German State Theatre Timișoara continues its exploration of its own history, bringing to the present themes that are essential to understanding the relationship between culture, identity and the political context.
Further details will be announced soon.
