A new GSTT production – The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, directed by Clemens Bechtel

The German State Theatre Timișoara (GSTT) announces the premiere of the performance The Magic Mountain, based on the famous novel by Thomas Mann, in a stage adaptation and directed by Clemens Bechtel. The event will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 7:30 PM, in the hall of the German State Theatre.

The new production offers a scenic journey into one of the most important novels of the 20th century, following the story of the young Hans Castorp, who arrives at a sanatorium in Davos and gradually becomes captivated by a world suspended between illness, reflection, and inner transformation.

Published in 1924, The Magic Mountain is one of the masterpieces of world literature, written by Thomas Mann, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel explores major themes such as time, illness, love, and the crisis of European values before the First World War, and is regarded as a profound portrayal of modern society and the human condition.

The performance, recommended for audiences aged 13 and above, will be presented with surtitles in Romanian and English, making it accessible to a diverse audience.

The premiere on May 23 marks an important moment in TGST’s 2025–2026 season and will be followed by two additional performances on May 30 and 31, 2026, with the May 30 performance included in the program of the Euroregional Theatre Festival Timișoara (TESZT).

The cast brings together Harald Weisz, Marc Illich, Ioana Iacob, Rareș Hontzu, Bülent Özdil, Alexandru Mihăescu, Aida Olaru, Tatiana Sessler-Toami, Dana Borteanu, Isolde Cobeț, and Richard Hladik.

The set design is by Ioana Popescu, dramaturgy by Mira Țâra, music and video by Alex Halka, choreography by Victoria Medvedeva, makeup by Bojita Ilici, assistant director Richard Hladik, and technical direction by Costinel Stănescu.

Through this production, Clemens Bechtel and his team take on the challenge of bringing a monumental novel to the stage in a contemporary form that is accessible and relevant to today’s audiences.
