Born in Arad in 1975. He attended the ”Nikolaus Lenau” High School in Timişoara before he started studying at the Faculty of Letters within the West University Timişoara (Department of German and English studies). He wrote his diploma thesis on German post-war audio drama. He graduated in law from the same university.
Before he began to work as dramaturge for the German State Theatre Timişoara in 1999, he was working as an editor for the Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung Romania in Timişoara. He supervised more than 30 productions of various genres and worked with well-known directors. In 2004 he presided the dramaturgy, marketing and PR department of the German State Theatre before he was promoted chief dramaturge. From 2007 to 2017 and again from 2021 to 2026, he was the manager of the German State Theatre Timișoara.
For his lyric debut feature als das wort zu ende war he received the debut price of the Timişoara branch of the Romanian Writer's Society, whose member he also is, in 2000. Publications of poems and short prose in numerous collection and anthologies. He also translated lyric and plays from Romanian.
Lucian Vărșăndan served as State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture from May to November 2016. In this position, he contributed, among other things, to improving the regulatory framework governing cultural institutions and projects. He also initiated and facilitated the administrative separation of the Bucharest Operetta Theatre from the Bucharest National Opera.
